This study aimed to construct and validate an instrument to measure beliefs and social representations of health professionals in the prescription and administration of strong opioids to people with incurable, advanced and progressive disease.
We used a panel of experts in the area of palliative care to construct the instrument.
The experimental version was applied to 301 health professionals (doctors and nurses). The matrix proposal found through exploratory factor analysis identified four components, getting a dimension with a single item. The instrument was shown to have good internal consistency indices assessed by Cronbach’s alpha. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the existence of three dimensions, revealing the sample model fitting quality indicators.
The results show that the presence of beliefs are effective barriers to the use of opioids in symptomatic control. Training in the area of palliative care was shown to have positive influence on the beliefs and attitudes of resistance to the use of strong opioids.
