Objective: To map the scientific evidence on instruments for assessing palliative care needs in individuals with end-stage chronic kidney disease.
Methods: A scoping review protocol was conducted based on the Joanna Briggs Institute method. Between June and August 2024, a literature search was performed in three databases: EBSCO, SCIELO, and PUBMED. The processes of data analysis, extraction, and synthesis were carried out by two independent reviewers. A total of 22 articles were included, resulting in the mapping of 16 instruments.
Results: Six instruments were specifically designed for individuals with chronic kidney disease, while the remaining 10 were for people with other diseases in general. Among these, the IPOS-Renal was the most cited instrument in the analysed studies due to its practicality and relevance.
Conclusion: As there is no single instrument capable of assessing all the needs of individuals with end-stage chronic kidney disease, the literature suggests combining multiple scales as an alternative. It is recommended to develop a comprehensive scale that can encompass all domains.
