The purpose of the article is, by using literature review and reflective analysis, discuss the importance, impact and bring up of appropriate strategies on patient and family care with chronic oncological pain, focusing on quality of life (QoL).
Our attention was focused: on historical evolution of QoL concept and the current importance of appropriate treatment to patient and family; in the contextualization of the concept of QoLin a healthy person; QoL on person with oncological disease and quality of life related to health (HRQoL); clinical ethics and QoL; QoL measurement instruments and its importance in care practice. We emphasize that on the provision of health care, the HRQoL is increasingly accepted as a major objective. In a more advanced stage of the disease the focus goes from cure to palliation, the main objective being the increase welfare with improvement or preservation of QoL. The QoL can only be measured and described on an individual basis, depending on the current lifestyle, past experiences and hopes, dreams and ambitions.
