Introduction: The administration of systemic anticancer therapy (SACT) requires nurses to have specific knowledge and skills to ensure safe and high-quality practice.
Objectives: To assess the knowledge and practices of nurses who administer SACT and to identify priority training needs.
Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted with 31 nurses from two hospital services dedicated to the administration of SACT. A self-assessment questionnaire adapted from the Portuguese Oncology Nursing Association was used.
Results: Participants presented an adequate overall level of knowledge and practices (M=1.62; SD=0.21). Four domains were identified as needing priority training intervention: Continuous assessment of the person undergoing SACT, Management of adverse effects, Continuity of care, and Professional practice and leadership.
Conclusion: The identification of training gaps reinforces the importance of developing continuing education programs tailored to the needs of nurses who administer SACT.
