Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide and the second most common cancer in Portugal, according to GLOBOCAN 2020. Advanced breast cancer is the leading cause of death and the stage that requires the most care, but several needs remain in the patient journey. A group of nursing experts gathered to identify the main needs of patients with advanced breast cancer throughout their journey, gaps in these needs in Portuguese institutions, and how to address them to optimize the continuum of care and thus health outcomes with quality of life. Four key moments in the patient journey were considered - diagnosis, first line of treatment, monitoring, and advanced lines of treatment and beyond - and, in each, a set of Nursing lines of action were proposed, which the authors believe have the potential to optimize the management of patients with advanced breast cancer in Portugal.
