Abstract

Introduction: Effective communication based on active listening is fundamental in person-centered care for cancer patients. Objective: Map the evidence on the use of active listening in clinical communication with people with cancer, identifying indications and reported outcomes.

Methodology: Scoping review according to the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The search was performed in the MEDLINE, CINAHL Complete, JBI Library of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Database, SciELO, RCAAP, OpenGrey and WorldCat® databases, with no time or language restrictions.

Results: Six articles were included. The intervention dimensions identified include presence and focused attention, openness and a receptive attitude, respect for emotions, feelings and beliefs, availability and valuing non-verbal communication. Active listening is recommended in contexts that require emotional, psychological or spiritual support, both at specific stages of the illness and throughout the cancer journey, and is associated with relevant outcomes in the care of people with cancer.

Conclusion: Active listening is a strategic tool in the therapeutic relationship and is relevant as an autonomous nursing intervention in the oncological context.
