Será o Optimismo uma mais-valia na doença oncológica?

Resumo

Este trabalho teve como objectivo avaliar a relação entre optimismo, morbilidade psicológica e satisfação com o suporte social em doentes oncológicos. A amostra incluiu 46 doentes, doentes do Hospital de São Marcos (Braga), diagnosticados com neoplasia maligna. Os instrumentos de avaliação utilizados foram os seguintes: Questionário Sócio-Demográfico, desenvolvido por Pereira
e Amorim para o presente estudo; Escala de Optimismo LOT-R (Scheier, Carver & Bridges, 1994); Escala de Stress, Ansiedade e Depressão – 21 (Pais-Ribeiro, Honrado & Leal, 2004a) e Escala de Satisfação com o Suporte Social (Santos, Pais-Ribeiro & Lopes, 2003).
Os resultados obtidos indicam que a morbilidade psicológica e o optimismo se correlacionam no sentido de doentes oncológicos optimistas apresentarem menor morbilidade psicológica, observando-se também que doentes oncológicos casados manifestam menores níveis de depressão, comparativamente com doentes oncológicos solteiros, divorciados ou viúvos. Ao nível da satisfação com o suporte social, não foram encontradas associações significativas com o optimismo; não obstante, encontram-se correlações significativas entre satisfação com o suporte social e morbilidade psicológica.
Implicações para a intervenção são apontadas.
