One of the main problems with health care is the abandonment and neglect of medical treatments prescribed by health professionals, this being one of the major causes of therapeutic failure. Concerned about this problem, the nursing team of the Oncology Service decided to implement a nursing consultation for non-presence symptomatic control within 48 hours after the first nursing consultation to the patient that begins chemotherapy and 48 hours after unscheduled consultation.
Objectives: To monitor and to control the secondary effects; to promote patient compliance to the medication regimen and to help to improve access to health care. In order to make possible the measurement of the results achieved in this consultation, a project,
“Non-presence nursing consultation – a strategy for patient compliance to the medication regimen”, was developed. This project led to a systemization of the assessment of the secondary effects and the compliance to the medication regimen, as well as the validation of the teaching. It was carried out between November 2015 and February 2016.
Operationalization: MAT scale, recording tool elaboration and checklist validation of the teaching carried out in non-presence nursing consultation.
Results: High level of compliance (an average of 5, 6) of the patients that started treatment, with the application of the MAT scale. Uncontrolled symptomatology 48 hours after the first chemotherapy treatment in 74% of 186 patients assessed.
Conclusion: The systematic monitoring of the secondary effects and the validation of the teaching allows us to establish more effecting nursing interventions, including a better compliance and contributing to the increase of quality and visibility of medical care. On this point, given the proportion of patients with uncontrolled symptomatology, and the fact that, according to the medical literature, it may be a reason for a reduction of the adherence to the treatment, this consultation presents a number of advantages for its rapid response as well as patient follow-up, which allows for a better planning of nursing interventions, thus promoting a positive change in the adhesion performance.
