Refounding Portuguese Nursing: the rockefeller foundation and the technical school of nurses of the portuguese institute of oncology in the 1940s

Legally established in 1940, the Technical College of Nurses (ETE) was part of the project initially developed for the group of buildings that were the core of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Lisbon. At that time, also was intended to increase the level of the profession in Portugal, which still lacked the scientific assertion and social recognition. While educational institution focused
on technical training of nurses with a significant component in oncology, has benefited from the connections that Francisco Gentil developed with the Rockefeller Foundation, resulting in a change in the training of nursing Portuguese scientific preparation.

Neta de Francisco Bénard Guedes (membro da primeira comissão directora do IPO), foi diplomada pela ETE em meados da década de 60, tendo gentilmente acedido a uma entrevista conduzida pelo autor e pelo Prof. Dr. João Rui Pita, do Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares do Século XX.
