Abstract

Chemotherapy treatment causes a set of adverse symptoms, with significant repercussions on the person’s well-being and quality of life, giving rise to specific health care needs.

Objective: Identify the scientific production on therapeutic guidelines, supporting self-management of symptoms anorexia, pain, diarrhea and constipation, associated with chemotherapy treatment.

Method: An integrative review of articles from MEDLINE® and CINAHL® databases was carried out, extending the search to secondary information sources.

Results and discussion: Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 50 articles/documents, published between 2008 and 2018, were included in the review. The therapeutic guidelines identified focus on aspects such as nutritional counseling, the introduction of dietary changes, the practice of exercise, alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, and cognitive-behavioral therapies.

Conclusion: The therapeutic guidelines identified in this review can contribute to the acquisition of knowledge and skills that allow the person to ensure their self-care, empowering them in the process of self-management of anorexia, pain, diarrhea and constipation symptoms, associated with chemotherapy treatment.
